Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is the canal that runs through the root of you tooth. An abscessed (infected) tooth is caused by tooth decay.  To fix this, an opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. The pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped. The root canals are then filled and sealed, closing up the remaining space.  A metal post may be placed in the root canal for structural support, and the crown of the tooth is restored.

A root canal may become infected due to several factors including tooth decay, dental injuries and gum disease. Under these conditions bacteria can enter the tooth, and your pulp becomes infected when it is undertaken by the bacteria. A sign of infection is when swelling becomes noticeable in your face.

Symptoms indicating that root canal treatment may be needed include:

-Moderate to severe toothaches, especially when attempting to eat hot or cold foods and drinks.

-Discoloration of the tooth.

-A bubble on the gums that resembles a pimple and releases puss when pressure is applied to it.

-Pain that starts in one tooth and then expands throughout other parts of the mouth, jaw and/or head.

Unfortunately these complications will not go away without treatment and it’s recommended to be seen as soon as possible.

Root canal treatment is a direct pain reliever and saves your natural tooth. The procedure can be performed in one or more visits depending on the severity of the situation. An infected tooth will require more than one dental visit to ensure that infection in the root is completely gone. Usually no pain is experienced during the root canal treatment. It is normal to have slight discomfort a day after the procedure which can be relieved by over-the-counter medication.
